RRANS makes possible LGBTQI+ refugee resettlement and supports safer communities of belonging through advocacy, education, and sponsorship.
2023 HoliGay Giving Campaign
Help Us Welcome More LGBTQI+ Newcomers to Nova Scotia
In 2023, RRANS welcomed 6 LGBTQI+ newcomers to Nova Scotia. We anticipate the arrival of another 3 individuals before the end of 2023.
In 2024, we're preparing to welcome at least 10 more LGBTQ+ individuals to Nova Scotia. We provide financial and settlement support to enable people to thrive with the dignity and respect that they deserve. But we can't do it alone; we need your support!
Our Goal: The average cost of sponsoring an LGBTQI+ refugee and supporting them through their first year of resettlement is $15,000. We rely on the generous support of community members, foundations and organizations to support us in our goal of resettling people.
Why Your Support Matters: Your support helps us create a welcoming environment where LGBTQI+ newcomers can find the support and resources they deserve. With your help, these individuals, couples and families can begin their journey towards thriving in Nova Scotia.

Around the world, LGBTQI+ people face displacement, persecution, and violence based on their identities. Rainbow Refugee Association of Nova Scotia is the only registered non-profit society dedicated to LGBTQI+ refugee resettlement and support in Atlantic Canada. Help make it possible for RRANS to resettle 8 LGBTQI+ newcomers in 2023!
Aseer is a mid-twenties writer/poet and LGBTQI newcomer from Afghanistan who connected with RRANS in the spring after Rainbow Railroad facilitated his move first to a safe-house in Pakistan, and then to Canada. He has a thick head of hair, is wearing a graphic T-shirt, and sports many tattoos. He makes a joke that he’s lost his sideburns since coming to Canada and shows proof of their existence before this big move.
